Taiwan Becomes First in Asia-Pacific to Achieve 100% FSC Certification for Public Forests

After five years of effort, Taiwan has achieved a significant milestone in the Asia-Pacific region, with 100% of public forests now certified under the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). The certification covers nearly 1.6 million hectares, representing 71.5% of Taiwan’s total forest area—the highest certification rate in the region.

The Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency of the Ministry of Agriculture introduced the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification system since 2018 to promote sustainable forest management.

Mr. Lin Hua-qing, Director of the Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency, emphasized that this accomplishment will help reduce Taiwan’s reliance on imported timber. By sustainably managing domestic plantations, Taiwan aims to increase self-sufficiency, reduce energy consumption, and cut carbon emissions from long-distance timber transportation.

To support sustainable forestry, the Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency has launched several strategies for managing timber and non-timber resources. These initiatives include:

  • Promoting FSC-compliant forestry practices.
  • Supporting certification for private forests.
  • Advancing the use of domestic wood in construction projects.
  • Revitalizing Taiwan’s bamboo industry.
  • Expanding the forest-based economy by enhancing the value of non-timber products, such as forest therapy services.

The agency is also working to raise public awareness of sustainable forestry. This includes encouraging consumers to purchase FSC-certified products, including promoting the use of local wood for school desks and chairs.

Taiwan’s achievement is setting a new regional standard for responsible forestry, proving that sustainability and economic growth can go hand-in-hand. With a focus on innovation and strengthened management practices, Taiwan is leading by example in the responsible use of natural resources, while also boosting local industries.
