In this rapidly changing world, FSC must constantly evolve. As an FSC member, I am proud to be involved in this process.

What inspired you to become an FSC member, and how does this align with your personal or professional values?

I’m working for sustainable production and consumption in WWF Japan. Therefore, becoming an FSC member felt like a very natural step for me. Not only do I share FSC’s philosophy, but FSC is also essential for WWF to fulfil its responsibility and take concrete action toward the sustainable society we aim for.

Can you share a moment when you saw FSC’s impact firsthand—economically, socially, or environmentally?

It was when I saw orangutan nests in FSC-certified forests on the island of Borneo. Seeing the real example of how economic activity and nature conservation can coexist strengthened my confidence to promote FSC.

What is one change or improvement you hope to drive through your FSC membership in the next year?

To be honest, it is difficult to answer this question. I am very interested in and supporting WWF Indonesia’s activities related to the FSC remedy framework, and I expect FSC to fulfil its responsibility as the most credible international certification system.

How has FSC membership enabled you to make a difference in your field or community? Can you give an example?

The global discussion on sustainability is evolving day by day. As an FSC member, I have the great opportunity to participate in these discussions at the heart of the organization, which enables me to quickly understand trends and take actions.

In your sector, what unique challenges does FSC help address, and how have you seen progress?

In responsible forestry, there are great efforts and many stories behind the products, but I thought it would be very difficult to convey this to buyers and consumers. However, the FSC scheme has made it easier to communicate about the challenges and the value of FSC-certified products.

Looking back, what accomplishment as an FSC member are you most proud of, and what made it possible?

In this rapidly changing world, FSC must constantly evolve. As an FSC member, I am proud to be involved in this process. However, our journey to halt deforestation and achieve nature positive is still far from over.

Furusawa Chiaki sees FSC as a living system that must keep evolving in a fast-changing world, not a finished solution. Her role is to stay inside that process, help drive its next steps, and keep the goal of a nature‑positive future from slipping out of focus.
